I learned from the movie Talledga Nights the Ballad of Ricky Bobby that if you preface anything with "All due respect" the truth can be told.

The truth is always best. It's the presentation of the truth (not meaning twisting it) that is key.

I use to be bluntly honest, which often hurt more feelings that not. Sometimes there is no way to present the truth without hurt, but other times it can be stated in a more positive way to soften the blow a little.
